Frank Sinatra tribute artist Robbie Howard will be performing, while others will share stories about uplifting our local community. Josh Heinz (pictured) and Linda Heinz, local musicians who run the yearly rock-music benefit Concert for Autism, will be awarded a Heart of Service Award. Tiny Boxes, Big Meanings

In advance of Sunnylands’ annual Coachella Valley Days of Los Muertos celebration, the community is invited to honor loved ones and explore the beauty of Mexican folk art at the Miniature Nicho Workshop, from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 22. Guided by local artists, participants will craft their own nicho, a small, decorated shadow box traditionally used to remember the departed or celebrate meaningful symbols. Basic materials will be provided, although participants are encouraged to bring items to personalize their creations. The workshop is a preview, of sorts, of Sunnylands’ Coachella Valley Days of Los Muertos festivities (Oct. 29–Nov. 2), which include community ofrendas, aerial performances and an outdoor screening of Pixar’s Coco, presented in collaboration with Raíces Cultura and other local organizations. This workshop is $32.70, and space is limited, but admission to the festival and all displays, at 37977 Bob Hope Drive, is free. See the full Days of Los Muertos lineup here, and sign up for the Nicho workshop here. —Charles Drabkin

All Tomorrow’s Parties

Pay tribute to some influential artsy-rockers. At 8:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 24, After Hours—a Velvet Underground tribute group—will conjure a set VU tunes, channeling the band’s artistic energy and expanding it into new musical territory, at Mojave Gold, at 56193 Twentynine Palms Highway, in Yucca Valley. These Los Angeles musicians are sharing their love for classic tunes like “Sunday Morning” and “Oh! Sweet Nuthin’” just as the original band intended—weird and trippy. Pride Takes Root

While Greater Palm Springs Pride garners a lot of attention as one of the largest pride celebrations in the country, smaller pride events are just as vital when it comes to creating visibility, connection and safe, affirming spaces. East Coachella Valley Pride will return for its ninth year from 3 to 8 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 26, at the Coachella Library Park and Gardens, at 1500 Fourth St., in Coachella. This year’s theme, “Orgullo floreciendo sin fin” (“Pride blooming without end”), celebrates the vibrant mix of culture, identity and resilience that defines the region’s LGBTQ+ community. The free, family-friendly festival brings together local artists, live performances, community resources, food vendors and art in a space created by and for East Valley residents. If you have only gone to large pride events before, I urge you to experience the magic that smaller pride festivals create.
