Pink Pathos
Wildly unique Oregon rockers are returning to the desert! At 6:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 4, Fox Medicine brings their “Bubblegum Doom” sound to Coachella Valley Brewing Co., at 30640 Gunther St., in Thousand Palms. Mixing heavy, down-tuned riffs with high-pitched, femme vocal screams, Fox Medicine have crafted their own genre, and use their pink, patterned and velvety stage wear to add an exclamation mark. Honor the legacy of a beloved musician, actor and humanitarian. At 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 4, put on your “Coat of Many Colors” and head to the Dolly Parton Lookalike Gathering and Celebration of Life, hosted at Más o Menos, at 66031 Twentynine Palms Highway, in Joshua Tree. Pay tribute to the voice behind “Jolene” and “9 to 5” by dressing up like Dolly and enjoying some tunes spun by DJ Soft Cuss. Hightail it up Highway 62 to catch some punk in the high desert! At 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 5, Long Beach garage punks Thee Toe Tags bring their sunburnt, reverb-drenched ragers to The Annex at Giant Rock Meeting Room, at 1141 Old Woman Springs Road, Unit A, in Yucca Valley. This ragtag group of rockers have a knack for crafting blazin’-fast earworms, and they frequently share a stage with local legends Throw Rag, so the desert is sure to love these cantankerous cats! Tacos With a Soundtrack
Taco Tuesday is a real holiday here in the Coachella Valley, with both Mexican and non-Mexican restaurants getting in on the festivities. At Maleza, at the Drift Hotel, a 284 S. Indian Canyon Drive, in Palm Springs, Taco Tuesdays come with live music. Tacos y Tunes pairs a taco-focused menu with a rotating lineup of local musicians every Tuesday evening through September. The weekly rotation of music gives you a reason to come back, although tacos alone make me want to come back. Reservations are recommended and can be made through OpenTable. For Those About to Come Out, We Salute You
If you like your rock ’n’ roll loud, theatrical and decidedly out of the closet, GAYC/DC is ready to shake you all night long. Billed as the world’s first and only all-gay tribute to AC/DC, the Los Angeles-based band brings the riffs, swagger and volume of the Australian rock institution. Head to the Dune Room, at 82707 Miles Ave., in Indio, at 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 11, because GAYC/DC takes the music seriously while putting their own queer spin on a catalog built for loud amplifiers and raised fists. At 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 13, Voices Reclaimed, a soul circle of the United Methodist Church of Palm Springs, presents “The Power of Participation: Turn Up and Turn Out,” a free, nonpartisan gathering regarding civic engagement and the importance of showing up for your community, at the Mizell Center, at 480 S. Sunrise Drive, in Palm Springs. Organizers welcome people across the political spectrum—including those who don’t consider themselves particularly political—for a discussion of voting, speaking, listening, volunteering and peacefully resisting injustice. Musical satirist Lauren Mayer, former Palm Springs Mayor Lisa Middleton, faith leader and civic engagement advocate Chris Jackson, and voter-registration coordinator Becki Robinson will join the conversation, with Joe Smith serving as emcee. Rosebud and Reporters
Citizen Kane opens the Coachella Valley Journalism Foundation’s “Bylines, Broadcasts and the Big Screen” film series at 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 13, at the Palm Springs Cultural Center, at 2300 E. Baristo Road. Orson Welles’ classic begins with the death of publishing tycoon Charles Foster Kane and follows reporters as they try to decipher the meaning of his final word, “Rosebud.” The post-screening discussion includes a direct connection to the film: Guests Josh Mankiewicz, a Dateline NBC correspondent since 1995, and Ben Mankiewicz, host of Turner Classic Movies, are the grandsons of Herman Mankiewicz, who co-wrote Citizen Kane. It’s an opportunity to hear two veteran journalists talk about a movie in which journalism, family history and Hollywood history overlap.
