‘Home Movies Out of the Closet: LGBTQ+, Hollywood, Palm Springs and You!’ on Sunday, June 1
The LGBTQ+ History and Archives of the Desert is celebrating Pride Month by partnering with other local nonprofits Deserted Films and the Palm Springs Cultural Center on Sunday, June 1, to present a day focused on LGBTQ home movies!
In the afternoon, the public is invited to bring their home movies for our home-movie-preservation experts to assess them and provide recommendations for storage and digitization. This FREE opportunity will be offered from 3 to 5 p.m. the lobby of the Palm Springs Cultural Center, first-come, first-served.
From 6:30 to 8 p.m., the Archives and Deserted Films will screen family-friendly (13+), rarely and never-before-seen LGBTQ+ footage from our collections. Footage will include clips recently digitized from the Melinda Tremaglio Collection, donated by Peter Kelly to the permanent collection of the Archives. Melinda Tremaglio is a filmmaker, TV producer, event planner, political activist women’s activist.
Also, in collaboration with the UCLA Library Film and Television Archive, we will treat audiences to historic LGBTQ+ works from UCLA’s collection by Pat Rocco, featuring Palm Springs and Los Angeles, and video artist Norman Yonemoto, plus home movies of Hollywood stars such as Frank Sinatra at home, at work, and at play. Following the screening, there will be a reception from 8 to 9 p.m.
Tickets for both the screening and reception is $45, which includes one drink ticket. All events will be held at Palm Springs Cultural Center, located at 2300 E. Baristo Road, in Palm Springs. One Man, Many Demons

From Thursday, May 29, through Sunday, June 8, the Palm Springs Cultural Center, at 2300 E. Baristo Road, in association with Desert Ensemble Theatre and TigerBear Productions, will host Deal With the Dragon, a one-man show written and performed by Kevin Rolston. This dark comedic fairy tale delves into the bargains we strike with ourselves and others to survive. Rolston portrays three distinct characters: an artist desperate for a prestigious gallery show; an obsessive acolyte; and a flamboyant rival. Lounge and Listen

Did you know that our desert is home to a high-fidelity audio lounge? Rosemary HiFi is half-bar, halflistening lounge, with a record player and an intense speaker setup installed directly into the bar, at 45120 Oasis St., in Indio. At 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 30 (and the last Friday of each month), DJ Costa hosts Noches Ilegales, a curated evening of jazz, salsa, soul and boogaloo sounds. Building Without Breaking the Desert

Can we grow without giving up what makes the high desert so magical? From 3 to 5 p.m., Saturday, May 31, join neighbors, advocates and community leaders for Finding Balance: A Community Conversation on Development in Our Desert Ecosystem, a free public town hall at the Twentynine Palms Community Center, at 6547 Freedom Way. Hosted by Indian Cove Neighbors and the Morongo Basin Conservation Association, the discussion will explore the question: How do we preserve our desert environment while promoting affordable housing and sustainable economic growth? This gathering presents an opportunity to voice concerns, share ideas and explore how the Morongo Basin can grow without compromising what makes it extraordinary, such as dark skies and vulnerable wildlife, including the desert tortoise. Super Trouper Poolside

Grab your sequins and say, “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” to a night of glitter-drenched nostalgia: Concerts Under the Stars is making its Palm Springs debut on Saturday, May 31, with ABBA Under The Stars—The Ultimate ABBA Tribute! at The Saguaro, at 1800 E. Palm Canyon Drive, in Palm Springs. What began as a pandemic passion project by New York performer Bernard Scahill has now blossomed into a 23-city, high-energy concert party with of live music. Psychic Readings With Raunch

He sings. He dances. He reads minds. And he’s bringing the heat at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 31. It’s Skyler Gentry in The Dirty Show—Psychic Summer! at the Dietlart Gallery and Performance Space, at 4629 E. Sunny Dunes Road, in Palm Springs. Techno Saturday

A local DJ is hosting his first solo show at one of Indio’s premier music venues. At 7:30 p.m., Saturday, May 31, tech house and bass house artist Quivero, after many festival and pop-up appearances, will perform his own solo show at Little Street Music Hall, at 82707 Miles Ave., in Indio. The remix master has earned fans across the valley with his unique spins on classic tunes, and is planning to explore all sides of his musical prowess on this headlining night. California Crossing

An iconic band often associated with our historic desert-rock scene is set to perform in Pioneertown. At 9:30 p.m., Saturday, May 31, fuzzed-out riff-rockers Fu Manchu bring their high-energy sludge to Pappy and Harriet’s, at 53688 Pioneertown Road, in Pioneertown. The desert’s own Brant Bjork played on some of the band’s hits, and the group has played in the desert before, but this staple of stoner rock history is from Orange County, yet continues to take heavy inspiration from the dirty and pioneering sounds of the Coachella Valley. Tap into your creative side at Paint and Reclaim: Upcycled Vase Art! by Desert Moon 25, a hands-on art workshop for all ages, at noon, Sunday, June 1, at Desert Ace Hardware, 5152 Adobe Road, in Twentynine Palms. Enjoy some fun community vibes by the pool! From 3 to 6 p.m., Sunday, June 1, check out the Women’s Tea Dance, hosted at our local oasis Palm Springs Surf Club, at 1500 S. Gene Autry Trail, in Palm Springs. The event, hosted by the LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert, is tailored to queer women and friends, and will serve as a meeting place and fun hang for women of the LGBTQ community.
