River cleanups are not glamorousโ€”but they are essential to keeping our planet at its best. The Wildlands Conservancy will celebrate National River Cleanup Day from 9 to 11 a.m., Saturday, May 16, with volunteers helping protect and preserve the Whitewater River. Check-in begins at 8:45 a.m. near the bridge over the river, about a half-mile south of the Whitewater Preserve parking lot at 9160 Whitewater Canyon Road, in Whitewater. Volunteers should bring a water bottle, closed-toed shoes, a hat, sunscreen, snacks, appropriate clothing and work gloves. The cleanup is part of the conservancyโ€™s mission of providing free public access to its preserves while caring for the landscapes that make that access worth having. Created by Dan Gore in collaboration with LaWanda Jackson, who hosts the evening, the production brings together a cast of drag performers whose careers were interrupted by serious health challenges, including stroke and Parkinsonโ€™s disease. The performers return to the stage not as polished comeback stories, but as artists continuing their work with a different perspective.
