Two local events promoters/musicians are hosting one kickass night of vinyl! At 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 27, Kickass Booking (run by Billy Gargan and Kyle Helm of local reggae band Space in Sound) will host Kickass & Friends, a genre-bending night of record-spinning hosted at Rosemary Hi-Fi, at 45120 Oasis St., in Indio. These two reggae rockers, alongside some desert homies, will share hits and deep cuts from their catalogues of reggae, jazz, hip-hop and R&B jams. The event is free, but you must be 21+. Five-Minute Funnies
Five minutes doesn’t sound like much—unless you’re trying to make a room full of strangers laugh. On Monday, Aug 31, and Wednesday, Sept. 2—and every Monday and Wednesday (Wednesday nights tend to be a little busier)—The Rock Gallery Comedy Club, at 333 N. Palm Canyon Drive, Suite 117, in Palm Springs, hands the microphone to about 15 comedians, each of whom get five minutes to try something new, polish something old, or perform standup for the first time. There is a two-drink minimum, with beer, cocktails and non-alcoholic options available. Open mics are unpredictable, of course—but this is a great way to support the Coachella Valley comedy scene. Sonic Concoction
Two separate music genres are uniting for one creative project. At 9 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 1, catch Naïm Amor and Kid Congo Powers at Pappy and Harriet’s, at 53688 Pioneertown Road, in Pioneertown. Naïm Amor, known for experimental soundscapes and avant-garde jams, performs with Kid Congo Powers, a punk-rock phenomenon who spent time in the Cramps and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. They Go Low (Desert)
Catch Yucca Valley vibes in Indio! At 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 3, Mojave music makes its way to the low desert for Sounds of the High Desert, hosted at the Dune Room, at 82707 Miles Ave. Palo Xanto (bluesy grooves with a hip-hop edge) and Fresh Basil (ethereal space funk) are making the trek down Highway 74 to share their jammy sounds. Blues on Their Own Terms
There’s a long history of women who sing the blues—and refuse to play by anyone else’s rules. The Palm Springs Women’s Jazz Festival returns this year with “Blues at the Woodstock: Voices That Don’t Need Permission,” from 6:30 to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Sept. 4 and 5, at Hotel Zoso, at 150 S. Indian Canyon Drive, in Palm Springs. The Friday lineup includes singer-songwriter Miriah Avila, who will revisit the music of Barbara Mason, while Kimberly Nichole takes on the music of Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton, whose original recording of “Hound Dog” came years before Elvis made the song famous. An Olympic Conversation
In the 1990s, figure skating was a big deal. We knew the names (Michelle Kwan, Kristi Yamaguchi and Brian Boitano), watched the rivalries and, every four years, had strong opinions about triple the lutz.
