The Purple Room’s Fall Season!

While the summer desert heat is still blazing, Palm Springs’ iconic supper club, Michael Holmes’ Purple Room, has announced a fall season that will bring some of the hottest stars to the valley’s coolest performance space with a roster of artists certain to sell out quickly. September highlights include Elvis: The Early Years With Scot Bruce, Debby Holiday, Jackie Beat and Sherry Vine, Jonathan Karrant, Jane Monheit, Chuck Sweeney as Miss Peggy, and Clint Holmes.

October begins with a tour-de-force performance by The Manhattan Transfer’s Janie Siegel, along with the vocal group’s longtime musical director and pianist/keyboardist, Yaron Gershovsky (Friday, Oct. 4) as they celebrate the release of their brand-new recording of legendary songwriter Cy Coleman’s The Colors of My Life. Acclaimed singer and songwriter Chadwick Johnson follows on the next night (Saturday, Oct. 5) with Fire and Rain: Singer/Songwriters of the Seventies celebrating the art of storytelling through the universal language of music. Sinatra & Me (Saturday, Oct. 12) features Richard Shelton, one of the world’s leading dramatic interpreters of Frank Sinatra.

Renowned pianist and singer Billy Stritch presents an evening of music and stories in an intimate musical outing on Friday, Oct. 18, and Saturday, Oct. 19, with sophisticated melodies and lyrics enveloped in dazzling harmonies as only he can. The inimitable Lucie Arnaz makes a triumphant return to the Purple Room to close out October on Friday Oct. 25; Saturday, Oct. 26; and Sunday, Oct. 27, with An Intimate Evening With Lucie Arnaz, a feel-good evening with some of the best stories ever put to music.

Healings and Crafts

Enjoy a day of mountain fun that may just expand your mind. From noon to 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 10, check out the Mountain Top Mystic Market, happening at the Rustic Theatre, 54290 N. Art in air-conditioned spaces!

The Loft Arts District, at 610 S. Belardo Road, in Palm Springs, hosts its hosts its Fall Preview Shows from 5 to 8 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 10. Free and open to the public, these six galleries showcase the work artists have been doing all summer in preparation for the Palm Springs season. The galleries represent various art styles, from geometric abstract and screen-printing to hyper surrealism. You will find something that speaks to you no matter your taste. Party in the Pool

The wave pool may not be working, but the rest of the Palm Springs Surf Club is!

The local surf oasis is hosting an evening of swimming fun for adults every Saturday this month. From 6 to 10 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 10 the Palm Springs Surf Club, at 1500 S. Gene Autry Trail, in Palm Springs, will welcome guests for Adult Swim. The lazy river, the Island Pool and Bar, and Amala Restaurant will be open to help you escape the heat and enjoy one of the new additions to the Coachella Valley. DJ Journee.

A local collective dedicated to drum and bass music is celebrating a year of making the Coachella Valley groove. At 9:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 10, JOLT Drum and Bass will host a one-year anniversary show at The Hood Bar and Pizza, 74360 Highway 111, in Palm Desert. Check out an all-vinyl evening of electronic music that will move you—and get you dancing! Performers include DJ Journee, .44Mag and ST1R. Feel the Vibrations

Be bathed with these!

At 6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 10, experience a meditative Sound Bath at Crystal Fantasy, 268 N. Palm Canyon Drive, in Palm Springs. Participants are “bathed” in sound waves produced by various instruments and resonant tools, including gongs, crystal singing bowls, chimes and more, to promote deep relaxation, stress reduction and healing. Chairs are provided, but bring a yoga mat and pillow if you want to lie down. If you miss this week, no worries; the sound baths happen every Saturday in August. Living Out, the LGBTQ+ 55-plus community at 1122 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way, in Palm Springs, displays more than 300 works of art from 53 local artists in its public spaces. From 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 14, check out the Living Out ArtWalk The public is invited to take an up-close look at the facility and its art—and all of the pieces are available for sale. Not Your Grandmother’s Drag Show

Every Wednesday at 10:30 p.m., Bart Lounge, at 67555 E. Palm Canyon Drive, in Cathedral City, hosts Creatures of the Night, an alt-drag show that is becoming known for its wild and irreverent drag performances filled with filth, glamour and horror. Think Boulet Brothers’ Dragula, not RuPaul’s Drag Race. Rotating hosts and special guests lead a company of creeps, freaks and others who take pride in being called “weird” on a journey not often found in the desert. Cop Funeral.

Stretch the limits of your music taste with some experimental sounds and styles. At 6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 17, explore the unique Idyllwild Experimental Music Fest, happening at Audiowild Studios 54240 Ridgeview Drive, in Idyllwild. Thirteen different performers, including Cop Funeral (pictured), will challenge the notion of conventional and standard music, using eclectic instruments and effects to pack an evening filled with avant-garde performance art.
