Ode to Appalachia

Join the folks up the mountain at Ferro Restaurant, 25840 Cedar St., in idyllic Idyllwild, for an evening featuring the progressive side of bluegrass music from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, Aug. 30. JazzGrass is dedicated to toe-tapping, accessible music that honors the traditions of bluegrass, Appalachian music and Americana. Grab yourself an Indy Endorsed margherita pizza (prices have risen since the endorsement was written) and a glass of Vermentino, and enjoy this uniquely American music. Ha Ha in the High Desert

A hot name in comedy is visiting the high desert. At 8 p.m., Friday, Aug. 30, comedian and Kill Tony podcast regular Jessie “Jetski” Johnson will perform a headlining set at Más o Menos, 66031 Twentynine Palms Highway, in Joshua Tree. The event is being presented by the Next Wave Comedy, a series of shows hosted by comedian “The Cass Man” Evan Cassidy, a part time resident of Yucca Valley. Tickets start at $22.53. Help out the growing skate community in our local mountain town. At 9 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 1, a fundraiser event will be hosted at Idyllwild Skatepark, 26375 Highway 243 in Idyllwild. Skate shops, restaurants and other businesses will host pop-ups alongside a skate jam. The event is free to attend, but raffle tickets will be for sale, with all proceeds going toward the construction of an updated concrete bowl and DIY obstacles. Indio’s Center Stage is hosting a family-fun event, complete with cars … and Cars! At 6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 4, enjoy the debut of Movie Night at Center Stage, 82881 Miles Ave., in Indio. Get Hydroponic

Learn how to grow veggies with your family using the La Quinta Public Library’s Hydro Harvest! A Flex Farm hydroponics system can produce about 25 pounds of produce per month. In September, the library, at 78275 Calle Tampico, will be growing cucumbers to make pickles. Planting is happening at 4:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 6, with a target harvest date of Sept. 27 (assuming Mother Nature) cooperates. Participants can do weekly garden maintenance and earn badges while demonstrating what they have learned. The free program is targeted at families with kids 8 years old and up. Join the Palm Springs Unified School District at the Palm Springs Convention Center, 277 N. Avenida Caballeros, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 7, for the third annual Diversity & Racial Equity Conference, open to students, staff, parents/guardians and community members interested in creating a safe environment for learning and understanding. The workshops and speakers seek to create an anti-racist, anti-hate community. A local artist is opening a new art show centered on classic rock icons. At 5 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 7, Patrick Hasson will celebrate 1969, a series of rock-star portraits, at the Shafer Gallery inside the Hi-Desert Artists Center, 55635 Twentynine Palms Highway, in Yucca Valley. Enjoy some psychedelic paintings of psychedelic musicians like Paul McCartney and Jimi Hendrix. 1969 will be on display through Sept. 22. The opening reception is free to attend. During the COVID-19 shutdowns, local fitness guru Ted Guice brought his G-Force Workout Class to Ruth Hardy Park, 700 Tamarisk Road, in Palm Springs. What began as a creative pandemic solution has become a community staple, drawing people from all walks of life to sweat and smile. Every weekday morning at 7:30 a.m., people—regardless of fitness level, shape, size or age—bring a towel, mat and hand weight (if they have them) and join Michael Koth, who took the reins about two years ago, to enjoy some fresh air and get healthy.
