For the young Nickelodeon fans, celebrate a long-running tradition that encourages more playtime and less screentime! From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 26, Nickelodeon’s Worldwide Day of Play comes to the Coachella Valley with an all-day party focused on connection and play hosted at the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert, at 71701 Gerald Ford Drive, in Rancho Mirage. For 21 years, Nickelodeon has paused programming on the Worldwide Day of Play, showcasing a message that encourages families to turn off the television and go outside. The screen break will be celebrated in-person this year, as hands-on experiences, art stations and outdoor activities will be available throughout the museum. Big Trucks, Little Kids
The Palm Desert Library has spent September introducing its youngest patrons to the people, vehicles and organizations that help keep the community safe and running. Earlier installments of its Emergency Preparedness Storytime Series brought visits from Riverside County firefighters, the American Red Cross (including Pedro the Penguin!) and Riverside County sheriff’s deputies. The series wraps up at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 29, when the City of Palm Desert Public Works Department takes its turn. City staff will share stories with preschool-aged children—and then give them a closer look at some of the trucks and equipment that keep Palm Desert running. It is a chance for kids ages 3 to 5 to learn AND see some big trucks! The event is free and takes place at the Palm Desert Library, at 73300 Fred Waring Drive. Fashion With a Purpose
Fashion gets the spotlight, but the reason for the runway goes well beyond clothes at the fifth annual Legacy in Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Fashion Show, happening at Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Palm Springs Pavilion, at 401 S. Pavilion Way. Presented by the Southern California Black Chamber of Commerce’s Palm Springs Chapter, the event brings together professional models, breast-cancer survivors, community leaders and celebrity guests to promote awareness, education and early detection. This year’s headliner is Los Angeles designer Marc Littlejohn, whose résumé includes work with Michael Jackson, Cher, America’s Next Top Model and Angela Bassett. The vendor fair runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the runway show from noon to 3 p.m. Tickets start at $20, and proceeds support breast cancer awareness, education, early detection, prevention and hope. Words of Hope
Poetry has been Doris Reed’s art for more than 40 years, and at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 4, she’ll bring her voice to Palm Desert for “A Woman and Her Poetry.” The hourlong performance takes place at Kitchen 86 Restaurant and Bar, at 73130 El Paseo, with pianist Mario Rossi providing musical accompaniment. A poet, writer, recording artist and motivational speaker, Reed has published two poetry collections and a children’s book, recorded a CD, and more. At the heart of this performance is a simple idea: Everyone has a voice, and using it can make a difference.
