Queer Film in the High Desert

The first 29 Queer Film Festival is taking place Friday, Sept. 20, through Sunday, Sept. 22, with events at various venues, primarily Theatre 29, at 73637 Sullivan Road, in Twentynine Palms. During three days of queer cinema and activities in the high desert, queer horror, drag and the realities of queer life will be well-represented; the films include one of my favorite shorts from last year’s Cinema Diverse, Inside the Beauty Bubble, a documentary about Joshua Tree’s hair salon museum. Catch a beloved local band at one of the hottest local venues. At 6:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 20, garage-reggae-punk hybrid Lazuli Bones will bring their catchy, genre-fusing musical gems to Music House Indio, 82777 Miles Ave. The local music store has been hosting community-forward shows in their back room, helping to empower the local music scene. Saucy Story Time

Take everything you know about story times … and throw it all out the window. At 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 20, drag star Jackie Beat will host Drag Queen Story Hour at DietlArt Performance Space, 4629 E. Sunny Dunes Road, in Palm Springs. For this story hour, there are no children allowed, as Beat will blast through a reading of the 1958 relic The Problem of Homosexuality, as well as some filthy songs and jokes. Puerto Rican pop star Chayanne has been performing since a very young age, first as part of the group Los Chicos and then as a solo artist. With 24 albums and many millions of copies sold, he is an undisputed pop music icon. United Cerebral Palsy of the Inland Empire is hosting its 34th Annual Bowl-a-Thon at 11:45 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 21. The Palm Springs International Comedy Festival just announced that Kathy Griffin will appear at the Celebrity Awards Gala and After Party at Hotel Zoso at 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21. The comedy-packed fun continues at the Mary Pickford Is D’Place Theatre, 36850 Pickfair St., in Cathedral City, from September 27-29. Featuring more than 100 standup comedians and 90 international comedy films, the festival promises laughter, celebrity appearances and interactive events.
