One Book, One Community

In this era of disunity, it’s hard to find things that unite us—but the shared experience of reading the same book can lead to conversations and a better understanding of our neighbors. This year, the Palm Desert Library, at 73300 Fred Waring Drive, in Palm Desert, is inviting everyone to read Finding Gobi by Dion Leonard as part of its “One Book—One Palm Desert” initiative. The book tells the tale of an ultramarathon runner who crosses paths with a stray dog while competing in a 155-mile race through the Gobi Desert. The book—available as a memoir, in a young reader’s edition and as a picture book—is something the entire family can enjoy. On the weekend of March 28, the author will give three free talks: a panel discussion at 11 a.m., Friday, March 28, at the library; a children’s story time at the library at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 29; and an author talk at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, March 29, at UCR-Palm Desert Auditorium, at 75080 Frank Sinatra Drive, in Palm Desert. Audiobooks and eBooks are accessible through the Libby app, and hard copies are available at the library. Find out more information at palmdesertlibrary.org/palm-desert-reads. —Charles Drabkin
