Poolside Sounds
Morongo Casino’s new Poolside Playback series is a perfect place for summer songs. The Thursday night concert series takes over the Oasis Pool at Morongo Casino Resort and Spa, at 49500 Seminole Drive, in Cabazon, from 7 to 10 p.m. every week through the end of September. A 21-Year Journey
Religion, family expectations and drag performance are not subjects that usually share the same sentence—but these are all elements that make Sabbath Queen so compelling. Screening at 7:30 p.m., nightly, through Sunday, June 21, at the Palm Springs Cultural Center, at 2300 E. Baristo Road, the documentary follows Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie over a remarkable 21-year journey. Born into a lineage that includes 38 generations of Orthodox rabbis and Israel’s chief rabbis, Lau-Lavie wrestles with tradition while carving out an identity that is distinctly his own. The film traces his evolution into a drag-queen performer, queer father and founder of Lab/Shul, an experimental congregation built around inclusion, creativity and community. A boutique hotel is welcoming members of the local counterculture. At 5 p.m., Saturday, June 20, cool off your dark heart at the Goth Girl Summer Pool Party, hosted at the Skylark Hotel, at 1466 N. Palm Canyon Drive, in Palm Springs. Some of the Coachella Valley’s best acts in the alternative music space—Danza De Luna, Lun Noir and Ahsatan (pictured)—will spin some sinister sounds. The Wanderlust Food Truck Festival is launching in Palm Springs from 6 to 11 p.m., Saturday, June 20, at Sunrise Park, at 480 S. Sunrise Way. The new weekly Saturday-night gathering is bringing a rotation of more than 20 food trucks and local food vendors together in one place. Expect everything from comfort-food staples to desserts that require extra napkins, plus games, family-friendly activities and plenty of open-air seating. The organizers have built a following with similar community-centered food-truck events across Southern California. Two Legends Open for Another Legend
A legendary musical figure is heading to Palm Desert. At 7 p.m., Saturday, June 20, don’t miss an extremely rare local appearance from folk icon Bob Dylan at Acrisure Arena, at 75702 Varner Road. Since the 1960s, Dylan has turned the music world on its head, adding deep artistic merit to sonic experiments in acoustic ballads, rock anthems, bluesy excursions and more … so much so that he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016. At age 85, he remains addicted to touring, sharing unique arrangements of hits and deep cuts from his stacked 60-year catalogue. Lucinda Williams and the John Doe Folk Trio are set to open.
