Palm Canyon Drive, Suite 117, in Palm Springs—you should know it is the kind of intimate venue where standup comedy works best, and Los Angeles comedian JT Tomlinson will take the stage at 7 p.m., Saturday, July 18. Drawing from his experiences as a recovering addict, a former overweight person and a current 20-something, Tomlinson and his standup/sketch videos have racked up more than 50 million views online. Jazzy Jared
The high desert is getting jazzy! At 8 p.m., Saturday, July 18, the Jared Guebara Quartet, led by local sax star Jared Guebara of Space in Sound, is set to perform at the Z Club, at 61877 Twentynine Palms Highway, in Joshua Tree. Rounding out the blissful jams is a backing band of local legends: Braden Rigling (Dusk Axis) and Christian Colin (Giselle Woo and the Night Owls, Space in Sound) and Jose Ceja (Giselle Woo and the Night Owls). The combined musical experience among the quartet is through the roof, so expect some tantalizingly tasteful tunes. This 21-and-older show is free to attend. A Broadway Diva Helps Christen Prism’s New Home
Prism Theatre is celebrating its new home with a musical all about ringing that bell and making an entrance. The Book of Merman follows two Mormon missionaries who knock on the wrong Manhattan apartment door and find themselves face to face with Broadway legend Ethel Merman. The show blends Broadway spectacle and campy comedy into big laughs. Following the success of its debut production, Camp Morning Wood, Prism has opened its new venue at 391 N. Indian Canyon Drive, with performances at 8 p.m., Saturday; and 3 p.m., Sunday, through Sunday, July 26. Tickets are $54.95, and the production is not for the faint of heart or easily offended. Waxing Psychedelic
Celebrate the discography of a modern music icon. At 7 p.m., Thursday, July 23, the diverse and ever-popular catalog of Australian psychedelic rock project Tame Impala will be spun on wax at local listening lounge and wine bar Rosemary Hi-Fi, at 45120 Oasis St., in Indio. Across almost two decades, Kevin Parker, the brainchild behind Tame Impala, has navigated through stoner rock, psychedelic indie, electronic pop and even dance music. Actor John Early often plays characters who are awkward, funny and unhinged—his feature directorial debut has that same sensibility. Festival Theaters, at 789 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way, in Palm Springs, is hosting two exclusive screenings of Maddie’s Secret, the first of which has already sold out—but the second, at 7 p.m., Friday, July 24, has tickets available and will feature a post-film Q&A with Early, moderated by Alia Shawkat. The film focuses on Maddie (Early), a dishwasher whose unexpected rise to internet fame at a trendy food-content company starts to unravel as an old secret surfaces. Tickets are $21.50.
