Bill Marx Tickles the Ivories for Charity on Bastille Day
Pianist and composer Bill Marx, son of Harpo Marx of the Marx Brothers, will once again tickle the ivories from 5 to 8 p.m., this Sunday, July 14, to benefit charity. Known for his wit, charm and philanthropic heart, Marx will be joined by his band, and his cousin Gregg Marx on vocals, to raise funds to benefit local residents with multiple sclerosis. Attendees will hear mainly standards from the Great American Songbook at the 14th Annual ACT for Multiple Sclerosis Jazz It Up at Mission Hills Country Club, 34600 Mission Hills Drive, in Rancho Mirage. Attendees are guaranteed more than two hours of music in a casual atmosphere with a hosted cocktail reception with appetizers, a summer buffet, a hosted open bar, silent auction offerings, music and camaraderie, all for the price of $150 per person, which includes a tax-deductible donation. ACT for MS provides free programs that are not covered by insurance. Enhanced strength training, circulation and mental health therapies, chair yoga, mobility aids such as scooters, wheelchairs and walkers, as well as educational workshops which help offset depression and loneliness round out the offerings. Michael Orland is a 16-season pianist, arranger and associate musical director on American Idol—and his Best of Coachella Valley-winning open-mic night at Oscar’s Palm Springs, 125 E Tahquitz Canyon Way, is famous for having Broadway and pop-culture stars drop by when they are in town. This month’s show, at 6 p.m., Tuesday, July 11, will feature co-host Melanie Taylor. You are welcome to come and listen to—or participate in—this wonderful night of music by some great singers. A talented group of local musicians is bringing even more heat to a summer outdoor concert. At 7 p.m., Saturday, July 13, check out local cover band Avenida Music as they blast through a set of ’80s tunes with a twist at Indio’s Second Saturdays event, hosted at the new Center Stage, 82881 Miles Ave., in Indio. How about some raunchy comedy to help you endure this summer heat? At 7 p.m., Thursday, July 18, local comedians/entertainers Deven Green, Handsome Ned and Skyler Gentry will host Palm Springs Summer Camp at the DietlArt Gallery, 4629 E. This evening of fun and games is not your average summer camp, as the trio will guide audiences through song performances, activities, comedy bits, “psychic readings” and … a talking deer. Pink Is the New Green

Aparna Rajawat is India’s 16-time women’s martial arts national champion. She teaches women self-defense, and her message of female empowerment is changing India one village at a time. At 5 p.m., Friday, July 19, head down to the air-conditioned splendor of the Mary Pickford Is D’Place theater, 36850 Pickfair St., in Cathedral City, to see a preview screening of a new documentary about Rajawat called Pink Belt. Desert Ceramic Art

The Palm Springs Art Museum’s Family+ workshops highlight artists and allows the community to work with them. On Sunday, July 21, head down to the museum, at 101 Museum Drive, as desert ceramicist John Flores will be teaching his techniques for creating his desert flower sculptures. The event is free and open to all ages, so this is a great way to escape the heat and spend some family time. With three sessions to choose from—at 12:15, 1:20 and 2:30 p.m.—you can find a time that works for you. Hello, Gorgeous (Christmas Version)

The Roost Foundation and the Roost Lounge, at 68718 E.
