What: “Cluckin’ Hot and Sweet Waffles” with two eggs
Where: Toast’d in PS, 190 S. Indian Canyon Drive, Palm Springs
How much: $26
Contact: 442-268-5525; toastdinps.com
Why: It’s both savory and sweet.
When it comes to breakfast, I generally prefer savory over sweet. Waffles, pancakes and French toast are fine … but bacon, sausage and over-medium eggs are SO much better.
When the hubby and I went to breakfast at Toast’d, however, I was craving a little something sweet with the savory—so I ordered the “Cluckin’ Hot and Sweet Waffles,” described on the menu as “sweet pearl sugar waffle, crispy golden chicken, drizzled with spicy hot honey, served with a side of fresh fruit.” I added two over-medium eggs, because, y’know, breakfast.
I was a surprised by the plate that was delivered to my table. For one thing, there was no fruit; instead, the plate had lettuce with dressing. I was also surprised that the “crispy golden chicken” came in the form of chicken tenders. Hmm.
I took a bite of a chicken tender, and thankfully, it was delicious—moist and well-seasoned, with just a touch sweetness from honey. (Alas, there was no hint of “spicy hot” to be found.)
Next, I took a bite of a waffle … and OMG. It was perfect: crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and delicious.
In addition to a variety of breakfast fare, both sweet and savory, Toast’d offers salads and sandwiches on its “day menu.” The “nite menu” includes many of the same things (including breakfast dishes like the “Cluckin’ Hot and Sweet Waffles”!) plus “pizza breads” and a handful of other dishes. If you’re a night owl, or you’re hitting the clubs, take note: Toast’d is open until midnight or 2 a.m., depending on the day.
The food is clever and tasty. The place is cute. It’s open late! What more could someone want from a Palm Springs restaurant?
