At 9 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 28, The Stinkfoot Orchestra will fire through a set of Frank Zappa’s best and most abstract songs at Spaghetti Western Saloon, 50048 Twentynine Palms Highway, in Morongo Valley. A worldwide group of desert-rock music fans is descending upon the valley for their yearly tradition. (Read more about it here.) At 1 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 29 a Facebook group named Kyuss World, filled with fans of the Palm Desert band Kyuss, will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the band’s album Welcome to Sky Valley by taking a group photo at the Welcome to Sky Valley sign, at 76861 Dillon Road, in Desert Hot Springs. Meet fans from all over the globe who worship the legend of Coachella Valley music, and pay tribute to some local icons. The event is free to attend. Slow and Steady Wins the Race

The Friends of the Desert Mountains celebrates Tortoise Week and our region’s native desert tortoise from 8 to 10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 4, at the Tortoise Walk and Talk. This leisurely one-mile walk starts at the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center, 51500 Highway 74, in Palm Desert. You will learn about the history of a new tortoise population being studied as you search for tortoises on the trail; the event is free, but registration is required. Can’t make it Friday morning? A horror classic and two musical masterpieces are merging. At 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 4, watch Nosferatu With Radiohead: A Silents Synced Film, screening at the Palm Springs Cultural Center, 2300 E Baristo Road, in Palm Springs; it is also taking place at 9:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 4, at the Mary Pickford Is D’Place Theater, 36850 Pickfair St., in Cathedral City. The 1924 film Nosferatu can be viewed in a whole new way, as this screening syncs the songs of Radiohead’s Kid A and Amnesiac to the creepy silent film. Tickets are $12, with discounts.
