If you’ve ever wanted to explore plant-based eating or sharpen your skills with fresh ingredients, chef Shannon Bush has you covered. With more than 30 years of experience as a plant-based chef, baker, caterer and culinary instructor, she brings both expertise and enthusiasm to her new Plant-Based Cooking Series. Bush, author of Help! A Vegan’s Coming to Dinner and Soups, Salads and Sandwiches Chef Shannon’s Way, is kicking off the series with a Salad Class at the Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory, at 71100 Highway 111, in Rancho Mirage, spotlighting techniques that go far beyond lettuce and dressing, at 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 25. Let’s Get Loud

Enjoy some heavy/hard rock from a ’00s doom-metal giant and two beloved local bands. At 9 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 25, catch sensational sludge-rock act Weedeater as they bring their slow, low and loud riffs to the high desert for a show at Pappy and Harriet’s, at 53688 Pioneertown Road, in Pioneertown. Coachella Valley decibel-crushers Unida (pictured above and in the email header) and The Holy Corrupt are set to open the night, so make sure you bring your earplugs! From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 27, the Psychic Pet Fundraiser: Pawraiser 2025 heads to Hot Lips Coffee, at 68461 E. Palm Canyon Drive, in Cathedral City, for an afternoon as mystics and mediums unite to support Desert Paws Sanctuary. For just $20, attendees can book 15-minute mini-readings. Specialties include card and crystal readings, shamanistic healing, hypnotherapy, psychics and folks who telepathically connect with pets, both living and those who’ve crossed over. Join Together, One Last Time

An iconic rock band has selected Palm Desert as the location for their final U.S. show. At 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 1, British rock force The Who will close out their farewell tour at Acrisure Arena, at 75702 Varner Road. Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend will perform hits like “My Generation,” “Who Are You,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again” and many others for the final time on this side of the Pond. Tell Me How You Really Feel

A premier singer of the modern indie/psych-rock sound is set to perform an intimate show in an iconic desert spot. At 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 2, indie-folk queen Courtney Barnett will perform a rare show inside the Joshua Tree Retreat Center, at 59700 Twentynine Palms Highway, in Joshua Tree. The space—usually used for sound baths, meditation sessions and other mindful activities—is hosting this concert by a music icon. Barnett, responsible for abstract, lyric-filled, mellow rock jams like “Pedestrian at Best,” “Avant Gardener” and “Over Everything” is advertised to be “previewing new music and playing some classics.” Tickets are $47.67. Tasty Treat of a Musical

The Palm Canyon Theatre, at 538 N. Palm Canyon Drive, in Palm Springs, is unwrapping its 29th season in a sweet way with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, running Friday, Oct. 3, through Sunday, Oct. 12. This production, based on the 2017 Broadway version of Roald Dahl’s classic tale, mixes new songs with favorites like “Pure Imagination” and “The Candy Man.” Audiences will follow young dreamer Charlie Bucket (Desmond McLeod) as he steps inside Willy Wonka’s magical factory. Directed by Se Layne, with music direction by Chuck Peery and choreography by Tegr Powell, the show brings together a cast of 41, including youth from the theater’s Summer Kids Camp. Art, Alien-Style

Los Angeles-based artists are bringing alien-themed art to the high desert! At 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 4, Bootleg Theater, a group of experimental L.A. artists, are set to open the Bootleg Dome, at 60340 Applegate Way, in Landers. The inaugural installation is named LETRA (Landers Extra Terrestrial Research Association), and features multidisciplinary pieces that deal with all things alien-related! Sift through artifacts, art, petroglyphs, sculptures and more while enjoying the newest dome-shaped hub for expression in the Coachella Valley. Explore the Desert’s Artistic Soul

For three weekends this October, high desert artists are opening their studio doors for the annual HWY 62 Open Studio Art Tours. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sundays, from Oct. 4-19, more than 200 artists will welcome visitors into nearly 150 studios scattered across the Joshua Tree area. The festival begins with the Art Tours Collective Exhibition at the Hi-Desert Artists Gallery, at 55635 Twentynine Palms Highway, in Yucca Valley, on view Saturday, Sept. 27, through Sunday, Oct. 19, featuring works by participating artists. This year also brings an expanded after-hours element: Art Tours After Dark, a free series of more than 40 live music performances at local venues.
