Sharing Is Caring

When I think of libraries, I think of words written on a page—but there are lots of ways to tell stories. Dan Magill is a renowned storyteller and public speaker. His interactive Story Telling Workshops help people share their experiences. The workshop, appropriate for teens and adults, is free and open to the public at the Coachella Library, 1500 Sixth St., from noon to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 25. An Enjoyable ALiEN PROBE

The high desert has always seemed a bit otherworldly, but now a bunch of aliens are touching down—and I’m not talking about the UFO conference Contact in the Desert. At 7 p.m., Saturday, June 1, ALiEN PROBE will perform at Palms Restaurant, 83131 Amboy Road, in Twentynine Palms. ALiEN PROBE is weird punk rock, as a large group of musicians dressed as aliens experiment with noise while leader Beth Allen, dressed in a space suit, tells stories of aliens as both a form of entertainment and a warning. The show will also feature performances by the fuzzed-out females in Yvonne Champagne, and the dreamy and spacey desert-ambience of Landroid. There is a $10 suggested donation at the door … for spaceship fuel, of course. For more information, visit instagram.com/alienprobehidez —Matt King

Presidential Retreat

It always surprises me how many locals have not visited Sunnylands, at 37977 Bob Hope Drive, in Rancho Mirage. It is the former home of ambassador Walter Annenberg and his wife, Leonore—and it has often been used as a presidential retreat. Midseason tickets to the home tours can be very hard to secure, but spots are currently available through June 2, before the summer hiatus. The stunning architecture, original furniture and the artwork are well worth the visit. Home tours are $55; garden tours are $28. Get tickets and learn more about the estate at sunnylands.org. —Charles Drabkin
