Catch the tail end of a Coachella Valley theatrical tour of Maggie Magalita, the story of a teen girl dealing with her native tongue and Hispanic roots. The final shows will take place inside the community room of the city of Coachella Library, 1500 Sixth St. The production’s theme of clashing cultures is poignant here in our diverse desert, and the play has been performed in Palm Desert and Palm Springs this month already by the Green Room Theatre Company. The Coachella Valley Derby Girls will open their season at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 30, at the Palm Springs Air Museum, at 745 N. Gene Autry Trail. For those unfamiliar with roller derby, it’s characterized by its fast pace, its physicality and strategic gameplay. Beyond its athletic aspects, it can foster a strong sense of community among its participants, and it places an emphasis on inclusivity and body positivity. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10, while kids 10 and under get in for free! Food and drink will be available for purchase, and there will be a 50-50 raffle, with the proceeds going to Lucky Bunny Rabbit Rescue. Remember to bring your own chair! Celebrating Jazz History

Event organizer Sue Townsley took part in the “Great Day in LA” photo in 2008, on the 50th anniversary of “A Great Day in Harlem.”

Jazz cats and history buffs are coming together to celebrate one of music’s most important photographs, with help from the Cathedral City Senior Center. At 10 a.m., Saturday, April 6, many Coachella Valley jazz and blues musicians will gather to take a group photograph at Cathedral City’s City Hall, 68700 Avenida Lalo Guerrero, to celebrate 66 years of the “A Great Day in Harlem” photo, which captured 57 luminaries of New York’s jazz scene back in 1958. A jam session will be hosted afterward from noon to 2 p.m. a short walk away at the Roost Lounge, 68718 E. Palm Canyon Drive, No. 203, in Cathedral City. Did you know that a local youth organization runs a music and arts festival every year? Alianza Coachella Valley, a local group, focused on building a healthy community, and their Youth Organizing Council are producing The Hue, returning from 4 to 9 p.m., Saturday, April 6, at Veterans Park, 1500 Fourth St., in Coachella.
