Let your Hair down, and “let the sun shine in!” At 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 6, a local production of the historic musical Hair opens at the Palm Canyon Theatre, at 538 N. Palm Canyon Drive, in Palm Springs. The musical, which touches on political division, anti-war themes and equality, is still extremely relevant today—and the ’60s-rock-inspired soundtrack still hits hard, too! Visiting The Living Desert, at 47900 Portola Ave., in Palm Desert, always offers inspiring lessons regarding the natural world. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 7, it will also be a place to imagine what a future in science might look like. The fourth annual Women in STEAM Career Day coincides with the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on Feb. 11. The event is designed for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, with an emphasis on meeting real people doing real work across a wide range of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) fields. There will be hands-on activities and conversations with women working in animal care, conservation, education, engineering, information technology, accounting and more. It’s All About Soul … and Community

From 1 to 6 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 7, the Cathedral City Community Amphitheater, at 68526 Avenida Lalo Guerrero, will host the return of the Soul Springs Festival, with a lineup of contemporary stars (including Madame Dee, pictured) honoring musical heroes from classic soul and R&B. Come for the day to sit, talk, listen and eat. Food vendors will be on site; picnic-style lawn seating is encouraged; and VIP picnic benches (which seat up to eight people and are $268.61 in addition to the general admission fee) are available for groups who want a reserved home base. Major League Soccer has returned to the desert yet again! The Coachella Valley Invitational brings both men’s and women’s teams from around Major League Soccer to the Empire Polo Club, at 81800 51st Ave., in Indio. Support a cult classic and an independent movie theater. At 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 7, catch the Rocky Horror Picture Show, the iconic musical comedy horror film, at Festival Theaters Palm Springs, at 789 E Tahquitz Canyon Way. The 1975 Rocky Horror film has transcended cinema, becoming an interactive viewing-experience complete with shouting, singing and throwing objects such as toast, water, toilet paper, hot dogs and rice. The screening is taking place at Festival Theaters, which recently revamped its mission to consistently support independent, global, LGBTQ+, arthouse and other films not shown at bigger chain theaters.
