What the Duck
Copper Mountain College has turned a swimming pool full of rubber ducks into a summer fundraising tradition. The Annual Lucky Duck Pluck returns at 3 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 20 at Copper Mountain College, at 6162 Rotary Way, in Joshua Tree. The festivities begin with a $10 barbecue from 3 to 5:30 p.m. on the lawn in the 300 Quad, alongside a community resource fair. At 6 p.m., hundreds of numbered ducks hit the pool, with dozens of prizes going to their lucky adopters. Ducks start at $10 for a pair (with larger flocks available!), with proceeds going toward the Copper Mountain College Foundation’s scholarships, book grants and more. Rejoice in vinyl-record revelry! At 5 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 22, check out the Triple Extra Large DJ show at Dale’s Records and Skate Shop, at 73754 Highway 111, Suite A, in Palm Desert. The event will feature sets from three local DJs (as the title suggests), so show up to hear the spinning skills of Rather Unique, Twerp Rocski and Planet Lunch. Ideas Take the Stage
The Coachella Valley has no shortage of people with ideas worth sharing. TEDxRanchoMirage received 499 speaker applications this year, then whittled that formidable pile down to five. Those finalists will take the stage for the second annual TEDxRanchoMirage at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 25, at the Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory, at 71100 Highway 111. Bayou Meets the High Desert
Tab Benoit has spent three decades performing Louisiana blues. The guitarist and singer brings his “Soul of the Swamp” Tour to Pappy and Harriet’s, at 53688 Pioneertown Road, in Pioneertown, at 9 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 25, for an all-ages show. Benoit’s 2024 album, I Hear Thunder, reached No. 1 on Billboard’s blues chart. His live shows center on his 1972 Telecaster, a tight trio and his ability to improvise.
