Why: These tacos are stellar.
Olga’s Tacos has long been racking up enthusiastic fans, first inside Fiesta Market (next to Paul Bar/Food) in Palm Springs, and then at their current stand-alone space in Cathedral City.
Now, the folks behind the popular Mexican restaurant have gone upscale.
Bohemios Prime by Olga opened in Palm Desert in January, offering breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week—with a later-than-most closing time (10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and midnight Friday and Saturday). In addition to elevated Mexican fare, the menu offers steaks, a lot of seafood, and even sushi.
On our recent visit—an early lunch before a Costco run—the hubby ordered the chilaquiles with eggs ($19) off the breakfast menu. He liked the dish, especially the accompanying rice. But we both agreed that my order of gobernador (“governor”) tacos were the hit of the day. In fact, these were some of the best tacos I’ve had in a long time.
The menu description of this Sinaloa-style taco is: “Handmade corn tortillas filled with sauteed shrimp, caramelized pico de gallo, and melted cheese.” But that description does not do these tacos justice. The toasted, melted cheese affixed to the inside of the tortillas adds extra dimensions, both in terms of flavor and texture. The menu doesn’t even mention the accompaniments—lime wedges, a roasted onion, a roasted pepper, pickled onions and a spicy salsa—one can use to tweak and enhance each bite. The tacos’ presentation, atop a wooden cutting board, is Instagram-ready. Oh, and the shrimp pieces were delicious and perfectly cooked.
Based on how much we enjoyed our two dishes, we can’t wait to go back.
