The Rancho Mirage Library, at 71100 Highway 111, will become a storytelling haven from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13, when the Palm Springs Writers Guild Book Festival brings in 40 local authors for a day of meeting readers, signing books and reading work aloud. The setup feels a bit like wandering through a lively literary neighborhood: a reading circle with live excerpts, a conference room packed with panel discussions, and a closing workshop for anyone looking to sharpen their own writing. Admission is free, and the day is both a celebration of the valley’s writing community and a chance to support local scribes during the holiday season. New Music on Vinyl

Celebrate the release of new vinyl singles from local soul bands—and a brand-new local supergroup! At 7:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 14, Coachella Valley soul act Café Canela will host a release party for their latest 7” single, “Secret Admirer”/“When You’re Here,” at Rosemary HiFi, at 45120 Oasis St., in Indio. This soulful duo have been making waves across the desert and beyond, as their mix of desert sounds and classic soul have gone viral online. Café Canela will be DJing vinyl and selling copies of their new record—and they will be joined by Burgundy Blues, another desert band with a soul vibe. The evening also serves as a release party for the latest 7” single from Burgundy Blues, “Dream of You,” which, on the B-side, features a collaboration track from both bands under the name Thee Hi Lifes. The Jimmy Dale Trio are set to headline; Jimmy will be honoring the iconic surf rock sound made famous by his father, the king of surf guitar, Dick Dale! Seven Feathers Gallery, a showcase of the talent of the Coachella Valley located in the Augustine Casino, 84001 Avenue 54, in Coachella, is featuring local artist Terry Hastings, starting with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 17. The show highlights his newest work, shaped by the Joshua Tree landscape, as well as digital pieces and abstract photography that bend color and geometry—and offer the occasional mystery. Guests can nibble on complimentary appetizers, talk with the artist and see his floating-frame canvases and archival prints. Deanna Bogart leads the night; she’s won five Blues Music Awards for Horn Instrumentalist of the Year, thanks to her genre-hopping style that ranges from blues to jazz to boogie woogie. She’s shared stages with legends like B.B. King and Ray Charles, so a lounge show in Palm Springs should feel like an intimate treat. Rabbi David Lazar joins her with vocals, sax and easy banter.
