Palm Canyon Theatre Presents ‘Falsettos,’ July 11-20
Palm Canyon Theatre presents Falsettos, the Tony Award-winning musical by William Finn and James Lapine, running Friday, July 11, through Sunday, July 20.
Set in 1980s New York, Falsettos follows a Jewish family as they navigate love, identity and the AIDS crisis. Marvin (Luke Rainey) tries to keep his family together after leaving his wife, Trina (Georgia Smith), for his lover, Whizzer (Anthony Nannini). Their son, Jason (Desmond McLeod), prepares for his bar mitzvah amid the family’s emotional upheaval. Mendel (Jonathan Brett), the family’s therapist, become increasingly entangled in their personal lives, while Cordelia (Nicole Kennedy) and Dr. Charlotte (Jana Giboney) offer ongoing support and perspective.

Get Freeky

Catch heavy rock legends in an intimate setting! At 9 p.m., Thursday, July 10, The Freeks are set to play Pappy and Harriet’s, at 53688 Pioneertown Road, in Pioneertown. Plants Without Pots

You’ve seen them hanging in boutique windows or in plant stores; now it’s your turn to get your hands dirty. At 11 a.m., Saturday, July 12, the La Quinta Library at 78275 Calle Tampico, invites grown-up plant lovers (ages 18+) to beat the heat and make their very own Kokedama ball. This Japanese planting technique swaps traditional planters for bound bundles of soil wrapped in moss and twine. Hang them; set them in a dish; and the result is green tranquility. This free, hands-on workshop is part of the Lunch at the Library Partner Project, funded by the state of California and supported by the California State Library. Revisit classic rock gems on a beautiful Indio evening. A Portland, Ore.., band is visiting Idyllwild to share their unique, heavy sound. At 5 p.m., Sunday, July 13, rockers Fox Medicine take their “Bubblegum Doom” sound to Hunky Dory Records, at 54425 N. Circle Drive, in Idyllwild, for a live performance. The band offers a unique musical combination, taking all the heavy, ear-shattering guitar tones and drum breaks from stoner rock and doom metal, and sprinkling in poppy, high-pitched vocals and lyrical subject matter revolving around dolls, bubblegum, candy and more. Wonderful Tonight

A tremendous tribute band returns to town! At 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 16, the star-studded Eric Clapton tribute band The Cream of Clapton Band heads to Big Rock Pub, at 79940 Westward Ho Drive, in Indio, for an evening of Clapton covers and blues wizardry. The band, fronted by Clapton’s nephew Will Johns, also features former Clapton drummer Steve Ferrone, longtime Clapton bassist Nathan East, and a series of other all-stars. Puppies and Poltergeists

Desert TheatreWorks is ranging from Broadway to barks as the 2025 Kids Works Summer Musical Theatre Camp wraps up with two shows that are heartwarming and hilarious. First up, the younger campers (up to fourth grade) are bringing the spots and the sass in Disney’s 101 Dalmatians KIDS, with toe-tapping tunes, puppy puns and a Cruella you’ll love to boo, with two 30-minute performances, at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Friday, July 18. This is a great way to support the kids and get out of the heat; tickets are $15. Next, the older group (grades 5-8) unleashes the underworld with Beetlejuice JR, an adaptation of the cult classic that’s campy and chaotic in the best way. Lydia, Beetlejuice and the gang deliver a full-on 60-minute experience, with Broadway-style belting and stagecraft that’ll make you forget this cast isn’t even in high school yet. These shows are at 5 and 7:30 p.m., Friday, July 18; tickets are $20. DTW’s education team runs both camps, and the results will leave you impressed. Be a Citizen Scientist

Get nerdy for nature at the Summer BioBlitz at the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center , at 51500 Highway 74, in Palm Desert, running Sunday, July 20, through Saturday, July 26. Hosted by the Friends of the Desert Mountains, this free, family-friendly event invites explorers of all ages to join scientists, naturalists and fellow amateur sleuths in identifying as many species as possible. Bring your phone, curiosity and sunscreen, as well as a hat, good shoes and plenty of water, and use the iNaturalist app to record wildlife and plants in real-time. Every observation helps scientists understand the biodiversity of our fragile ecosystem, and every participant gets a deeper appreciation for the mountains in our backyard.
