A Night of Skate
Embrace skating culture and watch the premiere of a new documentary! At 6 p.m., Friday, Sept. 13, check out Fight Night, a celebration of skating hosted by Rhythm Skateshop at Palm Springs Skatepark, at 405 S. Pavilion Way, in Palm Springs. The event will feature a game of skate, best-trick contests and the premiere of Honeymoon, a full-length film from Dickies Skateboarding, featuring a number of great modern skaters. Before the Desert Rockers Depart
Catch some legendary local rockers play an intimate local show before heading off on a European tour. At 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 13, desert-rock force Unida will headline an evening of face-melting musical madness at Little Street Music Hall, 82707 Miles Ave., in Indio, featuring opening performances by Jetta King and Jesika von Rabbit. Catch the new lineup of the band that once featured John Garcia of Kyuss fame, before they head out on a nine-show run in Europe. Tickets are $16.85 online, or $20 at the door. It’s a weird time for American cat fans these days, thanks to J.D. Vance’s obsession with childless cat ladies, and the xenophobic, made-up claims about what’s happening to pets in Springfield, Ohio (as heard during last night’s presidential debate). Fortunately, the Cat Fanciers Association’s Southwest Region is bringing an event to Palm Springs that should serve as a salve for all kitty aficionados. “A Masquerade! Cat Show” is taking place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Palm Springs Convention Center, 277 N. Avenida Caballeros. The good news, according to event organizers: “Come see up to 225 pedigree and household pet cats!” The bad news: “Sorry, but there will be no cats wearing masquerade masks.” Oh, well. Different Disney ‘Princesses’
A group of drag queens are paying tribute to iconic Disney songstresses. At 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 14, enjoy the Disney Channel Pop Star Brunch at Reforma, 333 S. Palm Canyon Drive, in Palm Springs. Sing along to hits from Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato and others as nostalgia meets debauchery. Dinner With a Drag Queen
Keeping with the drag theme: You need to have dinner, so why not do it with a drag queen—and benefit Cathedral City firefighters while you’re at it? From 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18, join hostess Patsi Kocan as she celebrates her seventh year of raising funds for local charities. Meet new friends and enjoy a delicious meal at Barrel District, 35939 Date Palm Drive, in Cathedral City. At Dinner With Patsi, you pay for your dinner while she tells stories, passes the hat, and tells you about the evening’s charity. Taste the Desert
The Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce presents its Business Expo and Taste of Palm Springs each year, and the 2024 version of the event takes place from 5 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18, at the Indian Canyons Golf Resort, 1097 E. Murray Canyon Drive. For $30, you get access to all tastes from 40 valley restaurants, wine, beer and tequila, as well as a cocktail bar and entertainment from the tribute band Bruno Mars and the Hooligans. Additionally, more than 100 local businesses showcase themselves. I have attended this event for the last few years, and it is always a good time. Diversity in Cinema
The Palm Springs Cultural Center, 2300 E. Baristo Road, hosts Cinema Diverse, the Palm Springs LGBTQ+ festival, over two weekends, September 19-22 and 26-29, with lots of great programming representing a diversity of queer filmmaking. I am a big fan of short films, and I highly recommend the set “Girls Just Wanna …,” at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21. I screened one of the films, Baba Yaga Smoked Me Out, which is highly amusing and engaging. Check out the Cinema Diverse website for a list of all the films. Tickets range from $14.50 for individual screenings to $179 for a complete festival pass. I think the best deal is the $79 six-packs, which can be used to see six screenings in any combination. —Charles Drabkin
Taste More of the Desert
Local musicians and chefs are teaming up! From noon to 9 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 22, Freedom Plaza, at 6547 Freedom Way, in Twentynine Palms, will host Taste of the Des, a musical and culinary experience. Throughout the event, 29 Dines will be serving up an array of great food via a number of food vendors. From 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., enjoy live music and songs you know well by The High 70’s and Desert Bluebirds (a tribute to CSNY, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Buffalo Springfield).
