Exciting news from the local art scene! The Artists Council is kicking off its fall season with a show and sale called Hot Times—Cool Art, through Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Artists Center at the Galen, 72567 Highway 111, in Palm Desert; it all starts with a free opening reception from 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 5. You’ll have the chance to peruse 130 original works of art created by the Artists Council’s talented members. Each piece interprets the Hot Times—Cool Art theme, with both two-dimensional and three-dimensional artworks on display. Kick Off the Weekend With Dance

A group of hardcore punk bands is inviting you to the middle of the desert. At 7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 9, check out some high-energy rock jams at Giant Rock in Landers. Boston’s The Hope Conspiracy will embark on their first West Coast tour in 14 years, headlining a show that also features hardcore from both Tijuana, Mexico (Violencia) and the Coachella Valley (Face Facts). Barks and (Food) Bites

The dog days of summer are behind us, but the Dog Daze at Snake Bite Roadhouse, 55405 Twentynine Palms Highway, in Yucca Valley, are just beginning. At 5 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 10, enjoy the best “Yappy Hour” in the high desert. Bring your dogs out to Snake Bite’s patio for free pup cups, treats and dog-friendly menu items. There will be dog adoption booths onsite as well as an info booth from Morongo Basin Humane Society. The event is free to attend, and food and drink are available for purchase. You may have read Melissa Daniels’ recent story on the seed bank managed by the Mojave Desert Land Trust, at 60124 Twentynine Palms Highway, in Joshua Tree. The goal is to preserve and store seeds, ensure genetic diversity, and safeguard against the loss of plant species due to environmental changes, wildfires and other threats. At 6 p.m., Friday, Sept. 13, Patrick Emblidge, the seed program manager, will guide folks on an educational journey into the importance of “Supporting a Diverse Ecosystem in the Future.” A short seed bank tour will follow the talk and Q&A. You Remind Me of the Babe

The Films in the Gardens series resumes at Sunnylands, 37977 Bob Hope Drive, in Rancho Mirage, at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 13. First up is the 1986 cult classic Labyrinth, starring Jennifer Connelly as Sarah, a 16-year-old who must solve a labyrinth to rescue her baby brother when he is taken by the Goblin King—played by David Bowie! Admission is free, with gates opening at 6 p.m. Reservations are not required, and carpooling is strongly encouraged. As no food or seating is provided, filmgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and small picnics. Large coolers, alcohol, smoking and pets are not permitted. Head to Palm Springs for cuteness, cool drinks and cool cars at 8:30 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 15. Frisky Business Palm Springs Cat Cafe, 4781 E. Palm Canyon Drive, will host Classic Cars, Cats & Coffee. Great Autos, a car club for the LGBTQ+ community and beyond, will roll up to Frisky Business to show off some stunning automobiles. After checking out the rides, head inside to spend time with lovable cats waiting for a new home. Desert Art Icon

The Agnes Pelton Home.

Agnes Pelton was a modernist painter, focusing on desert landscapes and the Indigenous people of the American Southwest. From 10 a.m. to noon, Sunday, Sept. 15, explore the historic residence where Pelton lived and sold her paintings to launch the original Desert Art Center. The painting “Smoke Tree in Bloom,” which was auctioned to raise the bulk of the money to open the center, will be displayed at the house before being loaned to the Desert Art Center. Celebrate her journey on the 75th anniversary of the Desert Art Center at a Come & Go Open House at the historic residence, at 68680 F St., in Cathedral City.
